This project explores the role of visual communication in the creation
of gender identities. How are femininity and masculinity portrayed
in popular culture? Does design contribute to, maintain, or even create
gender stereotypes?
Design is not merely a formal issue, because form is not free of meaning.
People working in the creative industries inevitably interpret the
content they visualise, and in so doing they produce meaning. Visual
culture reflects, but also shapes and often restricts our ideas of
